What is Sandtray Therapy

Sandtray Therapy

Sandtray therapy is a unique and effective intervention, especially for clients who have experienced trauma. However, its benefits extend beyond this group. There are both psychological and neurobiological advantages to using sandtray therapy.

A sand tray creates a safe environment for clients who may struggle to verbalize their experiences or find it challenging to discuss particular topics. This therapy can be conducted in silence or involve interaction with the therapist.

Importantly, sandtray therapy is not just for young people; many adult clients also find the process satisfying and engaging.

What to expect

In play therapy, miniatures (toys) are used as symbols that can help express emotional issues that are not easily verbalized. Just as a blank canvas allows an artist to create a masterpiece, a sand tray provides a space for emotional expression.

For example, a figurine of a predatory animal may symbolize an abuser, while an angel figure could represent a lost loved one.
